Texas’ Requirements To Exchange Information After A Car Accident
Accident With An Occupied Vehicle
Texas requires you to exchange information after a car accident with an occupied vehicle under certain circumstances. Section 550.023 of the Texas Transportation Code requires the operator of a vehicle involved in an accident that results in or is reasonably likely to result in injury to or death of a person shall:
- Give the operator’s name
- Give the operator’s address
- Give the registration number of the vehicle the operator was driving
- Give the name of the operator’s motor vehicle liability insurer
- Give the operator’s driver’s license if requested and available
Additionally, the operator of a vehicle involved in an accident must provide any person injured in the accident reasonable assistance.
Accident With An Unoccupied Vehicle
Texas requires you to exchange information after a car accident with an unoccupied vehicle under certain circumstances. Section 550.024 of the Texas Transportation Code requires the operator of a vehicle that collides with and damages an unattended vehicle to immediately stop and:
- Locate and give your name and address to the unoccupied vehicle’s owner; or
- Leave a written notice in a plainly visible place on the unoccupied vehicle stating your name and address and the circumstances of the collision.
If you fail to provide or leave this information you may be subject to a misdemeanor offense.
