Bad weather, including rain, ice, and snow can cause serious Slip and Fall injuries. While San Antonio and South Texas gets its fair share of rain, ice and snow are rarities. But even when a certain type of weather is uncommon, property owners should still be prepared to maintain the safety of their property during this inclement weather.

Rain

A property owner and employees are expected to keep their property reasonably safe from dangerous weather such as rain. A property owner and employees must be aware of any leaks that could arise from rain as well as any rain tracked in by employees and shoppers. Tracked in water can cause a dangerous hazard. This hazard is readily apparent and if the property owner or employees do not know of the hazard they should know the hazard exists. After all, it is very common for visitors to track water from rain into a property and create a dangerous hazard. Property owners and employees should take precautions to clean and repair leaks as well as clean or place warning signs or absorbent mats by entrances and exits to soak up any tracked in water.

Ice or Snow

It is rare for San Antonio and South Texas to experience snow or ice, but a property owner and employees are still expected to keep a property safe from these hazards. Careful attention should be paid to areas that can accumulate snow or ice, such as entrances and exits, parking lots, and sidewalks. Property owners should follow weather casts and understand when ice or snow is a possibility. Precautions should then be taken to ensure the property is reasonably safe.

Fall

San Antonio and South Texas may not experience changing seasons like other parts of the country, but falling leaves can still pose dangers to property visitors. A property owner and employees are expected to ensure leaves and other debris is clear of walkways, parking lots, entrances, and exits. A property owner’s or employee’s failure to remedy these hazards can lead to liability for injuries caused by these hazards.
